Over the next few weeks, I'll be introducing the characters from my upcoming book SCREWDRIVER.
The lead characters are Oumou and Yahya who we first met in THE TAINTED PRINCE.
In their story we get to see what happens in Bagumi from the perspective of the ordinary citizens leading up to the end of THE FUTURE KING and afterwards. Of course a few of the royal family make appearances.
ABOUT OUMOU
Oumou is Danai's best friend turned stepsister because Danai's dad married Oumou's mother. Friendly and flamboyant, she owns the local supermarket in their small town. The photo is my inspiration for her. Yahya says she has a glorious smile. Her favourite colour is yellow and she drives a yellow car. 💛💛💛
I've taken this excerpt from the first time we meet Oumou on the page in THE TAINTED PRINCE. Enjoy.
Danai rolled the motorbike down the narrow gap between the buildings and parked it in the shed she used as a lockup. Then she unstrapped her overnight bag, hauled it over her shoulder, and walked out to the high street pavement.
The sky was overcast, the afternoon sun breaking through grey clouds in patches. Across the busy, tarred bi-directional road stood a double-fronted shop with bright yellow board and bold black lettering proclaiming ‘Mou Supermart’.
A full-figured woman in a maxi black and orange print dress stepped out of the shop, saw Danai and waved enthusiastically. She looked left and right, checking for oncoming vehicles. When it was clear, she jogged across the street.
“Danai, good to see you.” They embraced, and Danai was cocooned in soft curves and jasmine fragrance.
“Same here. How are you?” She leaned back, smiling and checking the woman out. “You look fab as usual, by the way.”
“Me well, mèsi.” A beautiful smile curled Oumou’s lips. “How about you? How long are you visiting?”
“For the weekend.”
“Oh, good, because I have to rush somewhere. But I’ll see you later.”
“Of course. See you later.”
They embraced briefly, and Oumou hurried back across the street. Her friend spoke to a teen girl in a mauve and white school uniform before getting into the yellow pickup van with the shop logo emblazoned on the sides.
Oumou started the car engine and waved as she drove past. “Akeyi lakay ou, Danai.”
“Mèsi,” Danai thanked her, waving back.
She’d known Oumou since they were children when they hung around their parents’ businesses after school. Danai at her dad’s mechanic garage and Oumou across the street in her mother’s convenience shop. They’d attended the same high school. But when Danai had applied to university afterwards, her friend had chosen to stay at the local college instead.
Oumou hadn’t been academically inclined. But she had a great business brain and had since expanded her mother’s store from a simple provisions’ shop to a medium-sized self-service grocery and household retail outlet. The main one in their small town.
Danai loved seeing her friend be a boss lady. But she was also her stepsister because Danai’s father had married Oumou’s mother a few years ago.
The Tainted Prince is out now and available in ebook and paperback.
